Sericornis rufescens

Identification

10 cm. A small scrubwren.

  • Olive-brown upperparts, tinged buffy on forehead
  • Prominent buffy eyering
  • Brown tail with blackish subterminal band
  • Pale creamy underparts, whitish belly

Sexes similar, juvenile undescribed.

Similar species

Smaller than Large Scrubwren. Note also dark tailband, pale eyering and lack of rusty colour on face and throat.

Distribution

Found on Vogelkop and Bomerai Peninsula in northwestern New Guinea, Indonesia.
A common restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Replaces Buff-faced Scrubwren in Vogelkop peninsula and forms a species pair with it.

Habitat

Moist mid-montane forests, secondary growth and village gardens.
Occurs at 1300 to 1800 m.

Behaviour

Behaviour similar to that of Buff-faced Scrubwren.
A very vocal species.

Diet

Feeds on insects. Forages in small groups, also in mixed-species flocks.

Breeding

No information.

Movements

This is a sedentary species.
