16.5ccm. Short blue bill, grey tip, red eyes and red bare eye ring, rosy red legs, rufous crown, grey sides to head, neck and upperparts olive brown, underparts cinnamon, buff throat.

Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Suriname.

Placed in genus Laterallus by some authorities.

  • A. v. brunnescens - E Colombia (middle Magdalena Valley)
  • A. v. viridis - S Venezuela to Guianas, Amaz. Brazil, e Peru and n Bolivia

Dry savanna, wet or flooded lowland grassland, and pastureland.

It builds a spherical grass nest with a side entrance in marshes and 1-3 eggs are laid.
