36cm. Purple brown plumage, pale scaly appearance to the neck and underparts. Lower underparts are white edged with purple. Red eyering, legs and white tipped red bill. The female is dull dark brown, and is slightly smaller than the male.

Southern Mexico to Ecuador, southern Brazil, northern Argentina, and Trinidad.

This is a monotypic species. It has previously been placed in genus Columba.

Semi-open forest.

[edit] Behaviour

It builds a stick platform nest in a tree and lays two white eggs.

The diet includes forest fruits and seeds.
