Cisticola cantans has seven subspecies:^[1]

C. c. swanzii

Senegambia to southern Nigeria

C. c. concolor

Northern Nigeria to southern Sudan

C. c. adamauae

Cameroon to Congo and north-western Zaire

C. c. belli

Central African Republic to north-eastern Zaire, Uganda and north-western Tanzania

C. c. cantans

Southern Eritrea to southern Ethiopia

C. c. pictipennis

Kenya and northern Tanzania

C. c. muenzneri

Southern Tanzania to Zimbabwe
