Identification
26-31 cm. Grey-brown upperparts, dark grey rump, white underparts. Black head, nape, bill. White face. Grey-brown upperwing, black greater coverts and outer primaries forming an M pattern across lower back. Legs and feet are blue-grey. Grey-brown tail mottled with white.
Distribution
Pacific Ocean, nesting in the Juan Fernandez Islands off Chile. It is a transequatorial migrant, going to Japan before returning to its nesting sites.

Behaviour
Highly pelagic, rarely approaching land, except to nest and rear young. It uses burrows to nest in, preferring slopes and ridges in areas of dense fern forests.
