Identification
24cm.
- Warm olive-brown above
- Erectile and spreadable rich orange crest
- Paler, almost tawny-brown below with indistinct streaking
- Dark brown eye
- Rather stout bluish-grey bill
Females are similar but they lack the crest. Juveniles are undescribed.
Similar species
Macgregor's Bowerbird is slightly larger, has most of orange of crest hidden by brown feather edges and generally lives higher up.
Distribution
Endemic to southeastern New Guinea.
Locally common in its range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1]. Has hybridized with Macgregor's Bowerbird.
Habitat
Primary forest and tall secondary forest in lower montane zone. Occurs at 650 - 1300m, occasionally higher. Bowers usually on upper steep slopes of ridges, 5 - 30m below forested ridge.

Feeds probably on fruits and insects.
Breeding
Display season from September to December. A polygynous species, the male builds a bower to attract females, the female builds and attends the nest alone.
The bower is a hut-like structure based upon a central maypole. It's decorated with fruits of various colours, flowers and leaves. Destruction of other male's bower and theft occurs. Courtship apparently similar to that of Macgregor's Bowerbird.
The nest is a large, bowl-shaped structure made of leaves and sticks. No other information.
