Identification
23cm. A fairly small and slim laughingthrush.
- Brown plumage covered with fine whitish streaks
- Prominent whitish supercilium and moustachial to malar patch
- Maroon-brown foreparts with short scraggly crest
- Buffy breast and belly
Juvenile is paler and more rufescent above with no streaks on lower parts.
Confusion species
The facial pattern recalls White-browed Laughingthrush but note the dark rufous lores. Streaked Laughingthrush is lacking the white on face.
Distribution
Found in northeast India (Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram) and in adjacent western Burma.
Restricted-range species but common in parts of its range despite exploitation by cagebird trade.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
This species is sometimes placed in the genus Garrulax or in Strophocincla.
Habitat
Thick scrub, fern and grass near broadleaf evergreen forest, secondary growth, forest edge, abandoned cultivation. Found at 900m to 2400m.
Behaviour
Feeds mainly on insects.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, rarely in groups. A skulking bird.
Breeding season from April to Jule. The nest is a deep cup made of tendrils, creeper stems, dead bamboo, grasses, roots, bracken and moss. It's placed in a thick bush, a small tree or in the grass. Lays 2 - 3 eggs.
