This is one of the many Sunbirds that have recently been moved to the genus Cinnyris from the genus Nectarinia.

There are 4 subspecies:

  • C. s. stuhlmanni:
  • Ruwenzori Mountains (eastern Zaire and western Uganda)
  • C. s. schubotzi:
  • C. s. chapini:
  • Eastern Zaire and southern Burundi (mountains west of Lake Edward to Mount Kabobo)
  • C. s. graueri:
  • Kivu Volcanos, Rwanda and south-western Uganda (Mount Muhavura)
