Identification
27-31 cm (10½-12¼ in). A medium-sized Laughingthrush.
- White cheeks and ear-coverts
- Large white markings on tertial tips and outer tail feathers
- Grey fringing on remiges and rectrices
- Rich buff uppertail-coverts and vent
Distribution
Endemic to a small area in southern Gansu and northern Sichuan, China.
A restricted-range species with a very small and fragmented range. Classified as vulnerable.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This species is sometimes placed in the genus Ianthocincla.
Habitat
Bushy understorey and bamboo thickets in coniferous and mixed broadleaf-coniferous forests. Also in dense roadside secondary growth. Found at 2000m - 3500m.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes invertebrates, seeds and berries.
Forages mostly on or close to the ground.
Breeding
Breeding season from May to June. One described nest was a cup of grass and stems, placed in a pine tree. Lays 3 eggs.
Movements
Resident species.
