Pachycephala sulfuriventer

Identification

14 - 15cm.

  • Olive brown head and upperparts
  • Paler ear-coverts and orbital regions
  • Dark brown upperwing
  • Olive-brown tail
  • White chin, throat, breast and upper belly
  • Pale brown washed breast grading to yellow on centre of belly
  • Bright yellow lower belly, undertail-coverts and thighs
  • Dark brown eye
  • Black bill

Female has paler underparts. Juveniles have a rufous tinge in plumage.

Distribution

Endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Widespread and generally common restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.
The proposed subspecies meridionalis from Mount Lompobattang is slightly paler but usually not accepted.
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-bellied Whistler and Bornean Whistler.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes. Found from sea-level up to 2500m, but mainly at 800 - 2500m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects.
Usually seen foraging near the ground in understorey up to lower canopy. Joins bird-waves.
No infromation about breeding.
Resident species.
