Identification
28 cm.
- Velvety black plumage
- Powder-blue forehead and crown
- Extensive glaucous-blue pale wing patch
- Dull glaucous-blue tail with dark tip
- Haze eyes with red eyering
- Black bill
Females are similar but their plumage is dark brown with a ginger-buff throat and face and a small white area on the chin.
Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of Sumatra, Indonesia.
Classified as vulnerable due to continuing destruction of habitat. Estimated global population at 2500 to 10'000 mature birds.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered conspecific with Javan Cochoa.
Habitat
Tropical lower montane forest.
Occurs at 1000-2200 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on small fruits and berries.
Forages in bushes and probably also on the ground for invertebrates or fallen fruit.
Joins mixed-species groups.
Breeding
Breeding recorded in February, juveniles and immatures seen from May to June. No other information.
Movements
A sedentary species. Some local elevational or seasonal movements possible.
