Identification
55cm.
- Dull green upperparts
- Black crown
- Brown lower back with broad greenish-brown bars
- Green bill and legs
- Bluish green bare orbital skin
- Cinnamon buff underparts with rufous flanks
Sexes similar.
Distribution
Endemic to southwestern Sumatra where found in the foothills of Barisan Range.
A very rare restricted-range species. Long time only known from museum species and not observed in the wild after 1916. However in 1997 a bird was photographed and since then some sightings are known from southwest Sumatra. Considered critically endangered.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species which in the past was lumped with Bornean Ground Cuckoo into Sunda Ground Cuckoo.
Habitat
Primary or litte-disturbed rainforest.
Occurs between 300 and 1400. Recent sightings between 800 and 1000.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects.
No information about breeding.
Probably a resident species.
