18 - 19cm. A mid-sized babbler.

  • Scaled dark brown above
  • Dull rusty with vague dark scales and pale streaks below
  • Whitish throat

Sexes similar. Juveniles undescribed.

Endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia.
Restricted-range species but common in parts of its range.

Monotypic.
May form a superspecies with Black-throated Wren-Babbler and Large Wren-Babbler.
Also placed in genus Turdinus.

Primary montane broadleaf evergreen forest. Also in dense roadside vegetation in conifer plantations. Found at 900 - 2500m.

Feeds on insects and small snails.
Usually seen on the ground or just above it, foraging in leaf litter.
No information about breeding.
Resident species.
