27-29cm. Patterned black, brown, buff and white plumage.

Breeds in southern Siberia and Mongolia; winters to eastern and southern India, Sri Lanka, south-eastern China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Philippines and northern Australia.

This species is monotypic.[1]

Forest glades and meadows. Non-breeding habitat: shallow freshwater wetlands of various kinds including paddy fields and sewage farms, with bare mud or shallow water for feeding, with nearby vegetation cover.

The diet includes earthworms, molluscs and insects.
