Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are three subspecies[1]:
- S. m. simlaensis:
- Western Himalayas (Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh)
- S. m. modestus:
- S. m. klossi:
- Southern Vietnam (Da Lat Plateau)
Habitat
Alpine scrub and coniferous, oak and rhododendron forests
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of invertebrates, but seeds are also consumed.
Breeding
It nests in natural cavities in trees, laying 4-6 eggs.
