19 cm. Two colour-morphs. Most birds pale yellow, mottled with brownish-olive above. Dark morph all dark olive-brown.

French Polynesia.

Three subspecies recognized:

  • A. c. caffer on Tahiti
  • A. c. garretti on Huahine (possibly extinct)
  • A. c. longirostris on Moorea

Bamboo thickets and second growth forests in river valleys and hillsides to 1,700 m.

[edit] Behaviour

The diet includes insects, lizards, small fish, crayfish, snails and nectar.

It is believed to breed exclusively in bamboo thickets.
