Identification
26cm. Brown, long white supercilium, grey crown, brown face and chin, brown throat and nape scaled with grey edges, grey belly, chestnut vent, blue grey wings and tail, black-brown iris, yellow bill, pink brown legs. Sexes similar.
Distribution
Endemic to Taiwan.
Restricted-range species, but fairly common in suitable habitat.1
Taxonomy
Monotypic.1, 2
May form a superspecies with Black-faced Laughingthrush. Has also been considered to be conspecific with the latter or with Brown-cheeked Laughingthrush. Formerly placed in the genus Garrulax.1
Habitat
Scrub, bamboo thickets and the edge of forest clearings. Found between 1800m and 3300m, in winter sometimes lower (1000m).1
Behaviour
Feeds mainly on insects, berries, seeds and flower petals. Scavenges around rubbish piles.1
Breeding season from March to August. The nest is a cup made of grass blades, stems and roots, placed in shrubs or tall grass, about 1.2 m above ground. Two eggs are laid.1
Resident species with some altidudinal movements.
