Identification
A medium-sized Yuhina (13cm).
- Crest: chestnut, black and white
- Black moustachial
- White throat
- Underparts greyish
- Olive wings
- Black bill
- Yellowish feet
Sexes similar, juveniles apparently too.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of Taiwan.
A restricted range species, but very common in most of its range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[2].
Habitat
Temperate forest between 1000-2800m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on nectar of cherry blossoms and other flowers. Probably also takes small invertebrates and maybe fruit.
Usually seen in small flocks of 3 to 7 (mostly 4) birds. Very mobile, also crosses large open areas.
Breeding
Breeding season from April to June. Breeds up to three times a year. Communal nester, 3 or 4 pairs lay their eggs in the same nest and incubate eggs in turn. The nest is a small deep cup, made of roots, fern, moss and cobweb, placed among thick branches. One pair lays 3 to 4 eggs.
Movements
Resident species, some altitudinal movement occurs.1
