Identification
14 cm (5½ in). A dark tanager with a prominent opal brow.
- Conspicuous glistening opal brow
- Deep black hindcrown to back
- Contrasting glistening opal to opalescent-yellow rump with tinge of bluish
- Black tail with blue feather edges
- Black and blue wings
- Dark blue side of head and underparts with black feather bases, black centre of belly and undertail-coverts
Sexes similar, immature undescribed.
Distribution
From southeast Colombia south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Brazil south of River Amazon.
An uncommon species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Closely related to Opal-rumped Tanager.
Habitat
Moist lowland terra firme and várzea forests, sometimes also forest borders.
Occurs from lowlands up to 600 m, locally (southern Peru) up to 1000 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on fruit and insects like other species of the genus.
Forages singly, in pairs or small groups, in mixed-species flocks with other Tanagers, Dacnis and Honeycreepers. Feeds in the canopy.

A resident species.
