Identification
12 cm. A small tanager with a spangled appearance.
- Mainly blackish plumage above with pale greenish spangles on crown and nape and a small inconspicuous bluish-green central crown spot
- Greenish rump, becoming light blue on uppertail-coverts
- Dusky upperwing-coverts with blue edges, dusky flight-feathers with paler blue edges
- Dull black chin and throat
- Foreneck feathers with blue scaling
- Black spots on breast and sides, edgd bluish-green to brownish-yellow
- Cinnamon-buff rest of underparts
Sexes similar. Juvenile undescribed.
Similar species
Duller than Spangle-cheeked Tanager, blackish areas less intense, bluish-green instead of rufous crown patch and underparts paler and duller.
Distribution
Eastern Panama (Darien) and adjacent Colombia.
Fairly common in its very small range. Only a single record in Colombia, status there uncertain.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered conspecific with Spangle-cheeked Tanager.
Habitat
Montane and pre-montane forest and forest borders.
Occurs mainly above 1350, recorded down to 550 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on berries and fruit.
Reported foraging in groups of 3 to 4 birds in mixed-species flocks, especially with Pirre Chlorospingus.
Breeding
One recorded nest in August. The nest was ball-shaped and located c. 15 m up between palm-frond leaflets and atop main palm vein.
