[edit] Overview

This island south of Australia is the only federal state that is not contiguous with the other Australian states. It lies 240 km (149 miles) south of the Australian mainland and is located between 40 degrees S and 43.30 degrees S. Tasmania is surrounded by Bass Strait (to the north), the Southern Ocean (to the south and west) and the Tasman Sea (to the east). There are numerous islands from the Furneaux Group in the northeast, all the way down to Macquarie Island, at 55 degrees S.
