There are 6 subspecies:

- Tropical south-eastern Colombia (Caquetá) and eastern Ecuador (Napo-Pastaza)

- Tropical south-eastern Mexico (San Luis PotosÃ) to central Panama

- Tropical north-eastern Bolivia, Mato Grosso and Brazil south of the Amazon

They utilise old woodpecker holes in dead trees for the nest.
