Three subspecies are recognized in Tody Motmot:

• H. m. chiapensis:

• Pacific coast of southern Mexico (Chiapas)

• H. m. momotula:

• Caribbean slope of southern Mexico (Veracruz) to Honduras

• H. m. obscurus:

• North-western Costa Rica to extreme north-western Colombia
