25 cm long (including a 9 cm tail). Iridescent black plumage, orange patches on outer wing, black bill and legs. Females and young birds are similar but duller and with a greyish head, lacking the gloss.

Israel, Jordan, northeastern Egypt, western Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

The diet includes fruit and invertebrates; they groom Nubian Ibex and domestic livestock for parasites.
