- Sporophila beltoni
Identification
Similar species
Differs from Plumbeous Seedeater as follows:
- larger
- plumage more bluish grey (cf dark/dull grey)
- bill is yellow rather than dark/black with an arched culmen
- has different vocalisations
Distribution
Southern Brazil. Migrates to central Brazil in austral winter.
Taxonomy
Previously considered a subspecies of Plumbeous Seedeater, elevated to species status in 2013. Tropeiro is extremely closely related to this species genetically and there is evidence of a hybrid zone in southern Brazil although the plumage of birds there remains distinct [2]. This might suggest that the taxon is better treated as a distinct morpho- or eco- type of Plumbeous Seedeater than a full species.
Subspecies
Clements regards this as a monotypic species [3].
Habitat
Upland shrubby grassland associated with Araucaria forest.
