Myiagra oceanica

Identification

15 cm. A small flycatcher with a crest.

Male

  • Dark greyish-brown upperparts, darker and bluer on crown, paler and duller on lores
  • Whitish chin and throat
  • Rufous breast merging into whitish belly and undertail-coverts
  • Blue-grey bill and legs

Female

  • Smaller than male
  • Greyer crown
  • Paler on forehead and lores
  • Paler rufous on breast

Immature similar to female.

Distribution

Endemic to Chuuk (Truk) in the eastern Caroline Islands, Federated States of Micronesia.
A restricted-range species with a small population as there are only small remaints of forest left.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Guam Flycatcher, Palau Flycatcher and Pohnpei Flycatcher have been split from this species.

Habitat

Forest and forest edge, also in village gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects. Forages singly or in pairs in low undergrowth. Hunts its prey from a perch.

Breeding

No information available.

Movements

This is a sedentary species.
