Although the northern shores are now much degraded the southern half still has excellent wetland birds during passage periods and in winter. It is most famous for wintering Greater Flamingo but there are also Black-necked Grebe, egrets, waders including Pied Avocet, Kentish Plover and Little Stint and gulls including Slender-billed Gull and terns. The lake can be reached by road along the northern shore or through the lagoon towards Carthage. It is also possible to take a train to Rades and walk towards the old port of La Goulette.
