South America: found in Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.

Formerly placed in genus Basileuterus.
There are 3 subspecies:

- Eastern Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco) to western Bolivia
- South-eastern Bolivia (south-western Santa Cruz) to north-western Argentina (Jujuy and Salta)
M. b. roraimae is sometimes split as Roraima Warbler[2].
