Identification
17 cm. A rather dark Brush Finch with yellow underparts.
- Rufous crown to nape
- Blackish face
- Blackish upperparts with olive wash from back to uppertail-coverts and more olive in rump area
- Blackish upperwing and tail, latter edged olive
- Yellow from throat to undertail-coverts, greenish tinge on breast and flanks
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to the Cordillera Vilcabamba in southern Peru.
A poorly known restricted-range species. Seems to be uncommon.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered a subspecies of Yellow-breasted Brush Finch and both were considered to be a part of a wider complex that also included Black-faced Brush Finch and Bolivian Brush Finch.
Habitat
Found in cloudforest and elfin forest.
Occurs at 2520 to 3520 m.
