An arc from western Kenya through southern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, extreme eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, extreme western Tanzania, and extreme north-eastern Zambia.

This is a monotypic species.
Placed in genus Crithagra by Gill and Donsker.
Some authorities¹ treat the East African Citril and Western Citril as subspecies of the African Citril.

Moist woodland, forest edge and adjacent grassland, gardens.
