Identification
7 cm. A very small tyrannid with a relatively large head.
- Buff-whitish area around eye
- Greyish crescent-shaped auricular patch
- Bright olive upperparts, tinged brown crown
- Dusky wings with bright olive-yellow edgings and two indistinct wingbars
- Dusky tail
- Whitish troat and upper breast , flammultated with grey
- White rest of underparts, tinge of yellowish-olive on side and crissum
- Blackish bill
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Similar species
Has a less conspicuous auricular crescent than Eared Pygmy Tyrant. Also paler underparts and a slightly shorter tail.
Distribution
Locally at the base of the eastern slopes of the Andes in central and eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
An uncommon and poorly known species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Eared Pygmy Tyrant and the two species are sometimes considered conspecific.
Habitat
Occurs in lower montane and foothill forest and forest edges. From 400 to 1200 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on insects.
Forages in openings in lower and middle storeys, often perching in the open close to leaves, making fast, buzzy sallies to strike at prey.
