21-22 cm. Green, black and white scaling on breast, dark-red belly and rump, chestnut face and throat, blue forehead, white ear-patch, long, graduated tail with red underside.

Eastern Brazil where it occurs from Rio de Janeiro state north to Bahia.

The taxonomy of this species and Painted Parakeet is problematic. Recent DNA studies have prompted SACC to rearrange the species limits of this complex and split off several as separate species. (See citations below)

Lowland humid forest (mostly edges and clearings) but in some populations also near villages.

Forages from tree-top to the ground.
