Asia: found in Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, China, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bangladesh and Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar and Thailand

Placed in genus Calliope by Clements.

There are 4 subspecies^[1]:

• L. p. pectoralis:

• Mountains of Turkestan to Afghanistan (Pamirs) and northern Pakistan

• L. p. confusa:

• Eastern Himalayas (Nepal to Bhutan); winters to north-eastern India

• L. p. ballioni:

• Western China (western Xinjiang from Tien Shan to Kashgar)

• L. p. tschebaiewi:

• Eastern Ladakh to north-western China (Gansu), south-eastern Tibet and extreme northern Myanmar
