This species is about 19cm long. It is identifiable by its long, fan-shaped tail which is edged in white, and its white supercilium and throat. There is much plumage variation between subspecies.

This species is found across tropical southern Asia from the Himalayas, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia east to Borneo and Indonesia.
