There are 8 subspecies^[1]:

• P. p. cinereiventris :

• Northern Colombia (east to Santa Marta region)

• P. p. dorsalis:

• Tropical and subtropical south-western Colombia and north-western Ecuador

• P. p. nigriventris:

• Tropical south-eastern Colombia (Meta) to southern Venezuela, northern Bolivia, western Brazil

• P. p. polychopterus:

• Eastern Brazil (Piauí and Ceará to Alagoas and Bahia)

• P. p. similis:

• Caribbean slope of Guatemala to extreme northern Colombia (Chocó)

• P. p. spixii:

• Southern Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay, eastern Bolivia and northern Argentina

• P. p. tenebrosus:

• Tropical south-eastern Colombia (Caquetá) to eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru

• P. p. tristis:

• North-eastern Colombia to Guianas and north-eastern Brazil; Trinidad and Tobago

Forest and forest border, second growth, plantations, mangroves, clearings, isolated trees in humid or dry localities.
