Notable Species

This is an exceptionally good area for raptors and is famous for breeding European Bee-eater. The colony is situated in an old sand quarry and the birds are present in spring and early-summer.

Other species found in the sandy areas include Greater Short-toed Lark and Thekla Lark, Tawny Pipit and Woodchat Shrike.

Regular raptors over the surrounding wooded hills include Egyptian Vulture, Booted Eagle and Red Kite, and Red-footed Falcon has been recorded on passage.

This scenically very attractive valley is no longer privately owned and car-parking and entry is now free. This has lead to the inevitable increase in the number of beach-goers using the area.

Algaiarens is situated on the north coast and reached on the Cala Morell road north-east out of Ciutadella following signs for Cala Morell and Cala Algaiarens. Pass the turn-off for Cala Morell and go straight on following signs for La Vall through the pinewoods to reach a large car parking area. Take care on the approach roads as there is a large amount of traffic now.

Found this place when we went to Menorca in 1999, then it was a very quiet little place with no facilities. The whole estate was open to you, however the estate workers got a little annoyed if you strayed off the paths. I managed to get close up views of Egyptian Vultures on the ground, Yellow-legged Gulls were there every time we went. I also saw Peregrine Falcon and Common Cuckoo. For anyone with a family then it is worth visiting as the beach was quiet and relatively safe for kids.

Great birding on mostly level ground

When I was there the gates weren't opened till late morning
