Alternative name: Jameson's Snipe
- Gallinago jamesoni
Identification
Length 30-32 cm.
Upperparts, head and neck are streaked; coloured warm brown and buff with gold edges to the feathers, forming lines down the back. The belly is white, barred brown.
It has a long, straight and fairly robust horn-coloured bill, and yellowish-green legs and feet.
Sexes similar
Immatures show pale fringes on the wing coverts.
Distribution
South America: found in the Andes of Colombia to western Venezuela and eastern Bolivia.
Taxonomy
A monotypic species.[1]
Two subspecies are recognised by some authors: G. j. jamesoni and G. j. chapmani[2]
Habitat
Marshy areas where grassland and forest meet.
Behaviour
Diet
It inserts its long bill deep into the mud to extract insects and worms.
