Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil

There are 3 subspecies;

- E. s. spodioptila (elaopteryx):
- E. s. meridionalis:
- South-central Amazonian Brazil (River Madeira to lower River Tapajós)
A fourth subspecies, E. s. elaopteryx,[2] is not recognised by all authorities
