Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies:[1]
- M. n. nigripectus:
- North-western New Guinea (Vogelkop Mountains)
- M. n. saturatus:
- Montane forests of central New Guinea
- M. n. harterti:
- Mountains of Huon Peninsula and south-eastern New Guinea
Habitat
Moist montanes, occurring mostly above 3000' elevation.
Behaviour
Diet
An insectivore, eating wasps, flies and beetles. Joins mixed foraging parties with Little Shrike-thrush, honeyeaters and fantails. Catches insect in the air and by gathering from leaves in all stages of the forest, but mainly in the middle to upper stages.
Breeding
Recorded from November to January and June, depending on location, possibly breeding during the monsoon. It's nest is cup shaped and made up of moss and other fibres and covered with lichens. It is tied with spider web to a branch parallel to the ground at a height of between 3 and 9 m. 2 eggs.[4]
