13-13.5 cm. Rufous crown, long white supercilia, black cheeks, dull olive upperparts, olive grey breast, yellow-white belly. Sexes similar. Juvenile - browner on upperparts, dull supercilium, greyer breast, 2 cinnamon wingbars.

Central and southern Costa Rica and western Panama.

Pirre Warbler was formerly regarded as subspecies of this species.

Oak forests with a dense bamboo understory from 2500 m altitude to the timberline, but occasionally occurs as low as 1600m.

They build a bulky domed nest with a side entrance; 2 white eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects, spiders and other small invertebrates.
