[edit] Identification

15.5 - 18.5cm. A parrotbill with a distinctive head pattern:

  • White lores, eyering and moustache
  • Forehead to nape all black and a white throat with some dark speckles
  • Grey crown and ear-coverts
  • Rufous-brown above
  • White below, tinged buffy on breast and flanks
  • Orange-yellow deep bill

Sexes similar, juveniles are warmer above, have weaker black on throat and less pure grey crown.

Superficially similar to Nepal Fulvetta, but note the completely different bill and the more contrasting plumage of this species.

Found in easter Cambodia and souther Vietnam.

[edit] Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considered conspecific with Grey-headed Parrotbill.
Together with other parrotbills this species is sometimes placed in the genus Psittiparus.

Broadleaf evergreen forest, scrub near forest and secondary growth.

[edit] Behaviour

Feeds on vegetable matter including buds, seeds and chestnuts. Also seen taking insects and larvae. Usually seen in groups of 6 to 8 birds, sometimes much more. Regularly in bird waves. Often high up in treetops, behaving similar to a tit. No information about breeding.
