Male
- Dark blue above
- White below, with black throat and breast
- Dark legs and feet.
Female
- Scaling on underparts
- White undertail-coverts
- Buff tail
- Pale pink legs.

There are 3 subspecies:
- P. a. albonotata: W New Guinea (Vogelkop Mountains)
- P. a. griseiventris: Central Highlands of New Guinea
- P. a. correcta: New Guinea (mountains of Huon Peninsula and se peninsula)
