Identification
21 cm
Heavy black bill, with horn-coloured tip and edges
Male: grey brown, black head and throat, greyish-white ear coverts.
Female and Immature: brown overall, lacking the head markings of the male.
Similar Species
Fiji Shrikebill, Western Wattled Honeyeater, Eastern Wattled Honeyeater, Northern Wattled Honeyeater and female Golden Whistler.
Distribution
Fiji islands and the Solomon Islands archipelago.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
Two subspecies accepted:
- C. n. nigrogularis on Fiji
- C. n. sanctaecrucis on islands of the Santa Cruz group (Solomon Islands)
Sanctaecrucis is sometimes split as Santa Cruz Shrikebill[2].
Habitat
Dense, mature, wet forests, up to 1,200 m.

Vocalisation
Call: a very variable call; with drawn-out, wavering, whistles.
