Black hood, upper back, wings, and tail, including vent, yellow-orange underparts and lower back, slender black bill, grey legs and feet. Forages in trees and bushes.

Adult is similar to Black-cowled Oriole but has black undertail coverts and vent.

Mexico (where found in the interior and pacific slope) south to Nicaragua.

Polytypic. Consists of two subspecies.

Arid scrub and deciduous forests.
