Identification
47 cm, female 39 cm.
- Pale blue bare facial skin
- Pink wattle at base of bill
- Mostly black plumage
- Chestnut scapulars, upperwing coverts, lower back to uppertail-coverts (except rearmost ones) and undertail-coverts
- Yellow tail, central pair of rectrices black
- Black bill with yellow tip, expands into swollen casque
- Blackish legs
Sexes similar but female smaller. Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Northwestern Colombia (Chocó, Antioquia and Caldas) and eastern Panama (Panamá and Darién). An uncommon to locally common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes considered conspecific with Baudo Oropendola and Montezuma Oropendola.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, also close to plantations. Occurs up to 800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Not well known. Feeds presumably on insects and other arthropods, fruit, small vertebrates and nectar of large flowers.
Forages singly or in small groups at higher levels of forest. Rarely in larger groups.
Breeding
Breeding season from April to June in Colombia and in February in Panama. Probably a polygynous species, nesting in colonies with up to 20 nests. The nest is a long purse with an open top, lined with pieces of dry leaves and attached to branch tips. Lays 2 eggs.
Movements
A sedentary species.
