Identification

28 cm

  • Green plumage
  • White bill

Male

  • Bluish-purple belly patch
  • Blue-green flight and tail feathers

Distribution

Endemic to Brazil, found in the south-eastern lowlands (southern Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Humid broadleaf Atlantic forest; generally between 300–1000 m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds and pulp of native fruits, flower buds, nectar and insects.

Breeding

It nests in a cavity of a large tree or palm. The clutch consists of 2-4 eggs which are incubated for 28 days; the young fledge after 5-7 weeks.
