Psilopogon australis

Includes Little Barbet

Identification

17-18 cm

  • Green body
  • Dark bill

Head patterns vary according to subspecies
Female

  • Duller head patterns
  • Orange patches above and below ear coverts

juvenile

  • Green head
  • Blue ear coverts and throat

Distribution

Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Eastern Himalayas, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Malay Peninsula, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas, Bali

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Psilopogon.

Habitat

Broadleaf evergreen forest, woodland to 1525m.

Behaviour

It nests in a tree hole.
