Identification
41cm (16¼ in)
- Green plumage
- Blue head, flight feathers and primary coverts
- Tail
- Maroon base to uppertail
- Narrow green centre
- Blue tip
- Greenish-yellow undertail
- Green underwing
- Pale greyish-horn bill with black base
- Eye
- White iris
- Narrow, maroon eye-ring
- Dark grey facial skin and lores
- Dull pinkish legs
Juvenile: black bill, grey legs, dark iris, white facial skin and lores, otherwise similar to adult.
Distribution
South America: Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1], which in the past has been placed in genus Ara.
Habitat
Openings in humid forest near rivers or swamps, up to 1550m.

Breeding
The clutch consists of 2-4 eggs which are incubated for about 28 days; the young fledge after about 3 months.
