Identification
12cm

Male
- Blue along wing edge and rump
Female: all green, yellow tinge on head and flanks
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Forpus crassirostris has also been used as the scientific name for this species, even though the majority of world wide checklists now use Forpus xanthopterygius
Subspecies[1]
Five subspecies are recognized by Clements1:
- F.x. spengeli:
- Northern Colombia - sometimes split as Turquoise-winged Parrotlet (Forpus spengeli) or alternatively treated as subspecies of Green-rumped Parrotlet.
- F.x. xanthopterygius:
- F.x. flavescens:
- F.x. flavissimus'':
- North-eastern Brazil (Maranhão, Ceará and Paraíba to northern Bahia)
- F.x. vividus:
Dickinson3 and Gill and Donsker 4 recognize only flavescens, flavissimus and xanthopterygius and additionally crassirostris which is now split by Gill and Donsker as Large-billed Parrotlet.
Habitat
Cerrado, semi-open and shrubby areas, riverine thickets, forest borders, city parks, open woods, savanna.
Behaviour
Breeding
They nest in tree holes or use nests from other species, such as Rufous Hornero.
Diet
The diet includes fruits, seeds, grass seeds and catkins.
