Caribbean: found in arid scrub and woodlands of Hispaniola and Gonâve Island.

This is a monotypic species^[1].

Semi arid areas, scrub, mangroves, coffee plantations and forests to 1700m.

It digs a 30cm burrow in a river bank for its nest. The clutch consists of 3-4 white eggs.
